Boko Haram explosives found to come from Chinese factory seized in Cameroon

MILITARY investigators have traced explosives recently used by Boko Haram bombers to a Chinese factory in Cameroon which the terrorist sect seized a few weeks ago and converted into its workshop. Over recent weeks, Boko Haram has stepped up its bombing campaign across Nigeria, using suicide bombers, some of them women, including young girls not older than 10. Investigations into this new modus operandi has shown that these mules are being given bombs from the factory and sent on errands without knowing the content of their cargoes. Preliminary findings revealed that some of the teenage bombers were not aware that they were on suicide missions as they were lured on errands without knowing the exact nature of their missions. Fearful that this new approach may lead to an escalation in bombing, Nigerian military authorities are finally considering a full scale onslaught on Sambisa Forest, where Boko Haram has its base. Already, Nigeria's National Council of State has declared that

Cracks in NMA over strike suspension

• Monarch blasts doctors, alleges insensitivity Cracks have emerged within the Nigerian Medical Association (NMA) with members of its national executive disagreeing on whether to continue or suspend the nationwide strike which started on July 1. This is even as the Asagba of Asaba, Obi Chike Edozien came hard on the striking doctors over their demands of headship and consultant titles of government hospitals. Signs of a split in the NMA executive became glaring yesterday evening when a press conference scheduled for the Abuja headquarters of the association was called off after journalists had waited for over an hour. The Secretary-General, Dr Adewunmi Alayela, apologised to journalists to bear with the NMA, promising that the media will be furnished with the outcome of the meeting within 48 hours. The NMA had sent 24 demands to the government including discontinuation of recognition of non-medical doctors as directors and consultant title to any other health worker, ot

Ebola scare in Ogun

• Doctors place patients under watch • FG, Lagos delegates visit TB Joshua’s church over influx of West African nationals Palpable fear has gripped residents of Abeokuta, Ogun State capital, following news that two suspected Ebola virus disease (EVD) victims had been detected in the state. This came barely 11 days after a Liberian, Mr. Patrick Sawyer, died in a private hospital in Lagos and his remains were later cremated in the state. Speaking during a radio programme monitored in Abeokuta, at the weekend, the state Acting Epidemiologist, Dr. Yusuph Akeem, confirmed that two suspected victims were on surveillance in the state. According to him, the state Ministry of Health was already in possession of the names, addresses and telephone numbers of the suspected victims. He also stated that the victims resided in the state but worked in Lagos State. The state Director of Public Health, Dr. Yusuph Qudus, has revealed that the health officials in the state had been ho

Never Slice a Watermelon the 'Normal' Way Again

Rachel Tepper You know the trick to evenly chopping an onion, which calls for carefully slicing it in different directions? Slightly tweaked, the technique works wonderfully with watermelon, too. It results in long watermelon “pops” rather than the thick, nostalgia-inducing wedges to which we’re accustomed. (Those are satisfying to chomp into, sure, but they can be messy affairs.) The video above schools you about how it’s done. Eat ‘em as they are, or dress the pops in honey, lime juice, salt, pepper, and (if you’re feeling saucy) a dash of schnapps. This nifty trick makes watermelon—which is chock-full of vitamins A, C, and potassium—even easier to scarf down, and that’s huge: The value getting your five servings of fruits and veggies a day has never been more certain. So go forth and slice! Watermelon pops for all!

Israeli military will hold fire in parts of Gaza

GAZA CITY, Gaza Strip (AP) — The Israeli military says it will hold fire for seven hours in parts of the Gaza Strip beginning at 10 a.m. (0700 GMT). The military says Monday's "humanitarian window" does not apply to areas where troops are still operating. Israel withdrew most of its ground troops from the Gaza Strip on Sunday in an apparent winding down of the nearly monthlong operation against Hamas. But fighting continued in parts of Gaza. The military said it would respond to any attacks during that time.

Strong quake kills 381 in southern China

By JACK CHANG BEIJING (AP) — Rescuers dug through shattered homes Monday looking for survivors of a strong earthquake in southern China's Yunnan province that killed at least 381 people and injured more than 1,800. The streets of Ludian county seat of Zhaotong were like a "battlefield after a bombardment," resident Ma Liya told Xinhua. She added that her neighbor's house, a new two-story building, had toppled, and said the quake was far worse than one that struck the area in 2012 and killed 81 people. "I have never felt such strong tremors before. All I can see are ruins," Ma said. "The aftermath is much, much worse than what happened after the quake two years ago." The magnitude-6.1 quake struck at 4:30 p.m. on Sunday at a depth of 10 kilometers (6 miles), according to the U.S. Geological Survey. Its epicenter was in Ludian county township of Longtoushan. China's earthquake monitoring agency put the magnitude at 6.5. Rain and thunder

US missionary with Ebola leaving Liberia Tuesday

By BILL BARROW and KRISTA LARSON ATLANTA (AP) — A second American missionary stricken with Ebola is expected to fly Tuesday to the U.S. for treatment, following a colleague who was admitted over the weekend to Emory University Hospital's infectious disease unit. Writebol is in good spirits despite her diagnosis, said the pastor of her hometown church in Charlotte, North Carolina, who has spoken with her husband, David. "She is holding her own," the Rev. John Munro said. Munro's Calvary Church is a nondenominational evangelical congregation that sponsors the Writebols as missionaries in Liberia, one of the West African nations grappling with the worst outbreak of Ebola ever recorded there. Writebol's mission team partner, Dr. Kent Brantly, was improving Sunday after he was admitted to Emory's quarantine unit a day earlier, according to a statement from his wife. "Our family is rejoicing over Kent's safe arrival, and we are confident that he

German magazine reports Israel spied on Kerry last year

BERLIN (Reuters) - German magazine Der Spiegel reported on Sunday that Israel and at least one other intelligence agency were listening in on U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry's unsecured phone calls last year when he was holding nearly daily negotiations for peace with various leaders in the Middle East. The magazine cited "several sources from intelligence circles" as saying that although Kerry has a secure phone at his mansion in Georgetown, while he was traveling and needed to make a quick phone call, he sometimes used an ordinary telephone that the intelligence agencies listened in on. "A large number of these conversations, which went via satellite, were listened to by at least two intelligence agencies, including the Israelis," the magazine wrote. "It is probable that the Russians and Chinese were also listening in." The magazine said that Israel thus often knew precisely what Kerry was talking to the other sides about. Kerry, the magazi

US calls Israeli attack on UN school 'disgraceful'

By TOM RAUM and MATTHEW LEE WASHINGTON (AP) — The United States declared Sunday it is "appalled" by Israel's "disgraceful" attack on a United Nations school sheltering some 3,000 displaced people in southern Gaza. "The coordinates of the school, like all UN facilities in Gaza, have been repeatedly communicated to the Israel Defense Forces," State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki said. "We once again stress that Israel must do more to meet its own standards and avoid civilian casualties." The State Department referred to the attack on the U.N. school as a "shelling," although U.N. and Palestinian officials in Gaza called it an airstrike. The U.S. condemnation follows one by U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, who depicted the attack near the Rafah school as both "a moral outrage and a criminal act." Earlier, a senior Palestinian diplomat expressed outrage over killings and bloodshed on both sides in Gaza and call

… Fashola urges FG to shut borders with neighbouring countries

Lagos State governor, Mr. Babatunde Fashola has advised the Federal Government to immediately shut its borders with neighbouring countries without delay to avert spread of the disease. Fashola who spoke yesterday amid concern over the controversy generated by corpse from Liberia said it must have been routed through Lagos to Anambra State. The governor noted that, “This is no longer a local, but an international problem. This is because it is easily transmittable across the borders and boundaries. The Federal Government team has been working with the state team. I think what the Federal Government needed to do at this time is to consider the imperative of closing some of our borders. “It is difficult to stop this epidemic. We must now choose the treaty obligations that we hold under the Economic Community Of West African States (ECOWAS) treaty and perhaps short term benefits in terms of economic cost to human life. “We must make that choice and consider it very seriously.
