He spoke along with PDP leaders in the zone at the event themed, ‘Transformation Agenda: Continuity for National Progress’. He said, “No one should say Fashola is doing well in Lagos. Go to Akwa Ibom and see what the governor is doing there. Look at the stadium in Akwa Ibom. How many stadiums has Fashola built? Judge OKs Oklahoma's lethal injection protocol

OKLAHOMA CITY (AP) — Oklahoma's lethal injection protocol is constitutional and the state can proceed with the scheduled executions of four death row inmates early next year, a federal judge ruled on Monday. U.S. District Judge Stephen Friot denied a request for a preliminary injunction that was requested by a group of Oklahoma death row inmates. The prisoners argued the use of the sedative midazolam as the first drug in a three-drug combination the state administers risks subjecting them to unconstitutionally cruel and unusual punishment. After the ruling, Department of Corrections Director Robert Patton said the state planned to move forward with the execution of Charles Frederick Warner on Jan. 15 and three other lethal injections scheduled through March 5. "We will now proceed with the guidelines set forth in the policy and protocol in preparation for the upcoming executions," Patton said. The inmates sued after the April 29 execution of Clayton Lockett, who

Death of Joe Cocker, 'greatest soul voice of Britain'

By Shaun Tandon New York (AFP) - Legendary singer Joe Cocker, whose intense, gritty voice won him wide acclaim that spanned both rock and blues, has died at age 70, his agent said. Cocker, who started off playing to small audiences in pubs in his native England, gained fame when he jolted the 1969 Woodstock festival with his high-powered version of the Beatles' "With a Little Help From My Friends" -- one of rock's most successful covers. Cocker -- who on stage would flail his arms so wildly that uninitiated crowds wondered if he had neurological problems -- said in a 1971 movie about him, "Mad Dogs and Englishmen," that music served as his release and mused that he could have been a murderer if he had not been a singer. But some of his biggest hits showed a gentler side, including the love ballad "You Are So Beautiful" and "Up Where We Belong," a Grammy-winning 1982 duet with Jennifer Warnes that figured prominently in the movi

North Korean websites back online after shutdown

SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — Key North Korean websites were back online Tuesday after an hours-long shutdown that followed a U.S. vow to respond to a cyberattack on Sony Pictures that Washington blames on Pyongyang. The White House and the State Department declined to say whether the U.S. government was responsible for the shutdown in one of the least-wired countries in the world. Internet access to the North's official Korean Central News Agency and the Rodong Sinmun newspaper were working normally Tuesday after being earlier inaccessible, South Korean officials said. Those sites are the main channels for official North Korea news, with servers located abroad. U.S. computer experts earlier said North Korea experienced sweeping and progressively worse Internet outages. One said the country's online access was "totally down." President Barack Obama said Friday the U.S. government expected to respond to the Sony hack, which he described as an expensive act of "

Boston bombing suspect Tsarnaev wants 'supporters’ moved away from courthouse

By Holly Bailey Dzhokhar Tsarnaev's attorneys say 'inflammatory’ protesters are hurting his right to a fair trial Accused Boston Marathon bomber Dzhokhar Tsarnaev is asking a federal judge to clamp down on “self-appointed supporters” protesting on his behalf outside a Boston courthouse, arguing that their “inflammatory accusations” could hurt his right to a fair trial. In a court filing Monday, Tsarnaev’s defense team sought to distance themselves from the demonstrators, arguing they could have a “deleterious and prejudicial impact” on his trial, which is set to begin Jan. 5. The supporters, his attorneys wrote, “advocate various conspiracy theories concerning the marathon bombing, including that the resulting deaths and injuries have somehow been faked as part of a government plot.” Tsarnaev’s lawyers asked federal Judge George O’Toole, who is overseeing the case, to direct the U.S. Marshals Service to move the demonstrators away from the courthouse, because their pres

How President Obama unwinds

By Olivier Knox For Obama, keeping an even keel takes a mix of golf, books, Nicorette – and, most importantly, time with the first family It was September 2012, and President Barack Obama’s inner circle was stressed. Obama’s aides thought his Sept. 6 speech to the Democratic National Convention had gone well — but media accounts panned it and focused instead on Bill Clinton’s address the day before. “We all thought his speech had gone really well, but all you a------- said it was horrible and that Bill Clinton was amazing and blah blah blah,” a senior aide recalled, pointedly referring to the political news media. Aboard Air Force One, chief speechwriter Jon Favreau was in the middle of doing a derisive, dramatic reading of some of the more annoying reviews, when the president stopped him. “Hey, man, how do you think I feel?” the aide recalled Obama telling Favreau. “I wake up every day knowing that at least half the country thinks I’m bad at my job.” “You can and should l

N. Korea threatens strikes on US amid hacking claims

By HYUNG-JIN KIM SEOUL, South Korea (AP) — President Barack Obama is "recklessly" spreading rumors of a Pyongyang-orchestrated cyberattack of Sony Pictures, North Korea says, as it warns of strikes against the White House, Pentagon and "the whole U.S. mainland, that cesspool of terrorism." Such rhetoric is routine from North Korea's massive propaganda machine during times of high tension with Washington. But a long statement from the powerful National Defense Commission late Sunday also underscores Pyongyang's sensitivity at a movie whose plot focuses on the assassination of its leader Kim Jong Un, who is the beneficiary of a decades-long cult of personality built around his family dynasty. The U.S. blames North Korea for the cyberattack that escalated to threats of terror attacks against U.S. movie theaters and caused Sony to cancel "The Interview's" release. Obama, who promised to respond "proportionately" to the attack,

China condemns cyberattacks, but says no proof North Korea hacked Sony

By Megha Rajagopalan and Steve Holland BEIJING/WASHINGTON (Reuters) - China said on Monday it opposed all forms of cyberattacks but there was no proof that North Korea was responsible for the hacking of Sony Pictures, as the United States has said. North Korea has denied it was to blame and has vowed to hit back against any U.S. retaliation, threatening the White House and the Pentagon. The hackers said they were incensed by a Sony comedy about a fictional assassination of North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, which the studio has pulled. China made no reference to calls by the United States for joint action with it and other countries to counter any similar cyberattacks. "Before making any conclusions there has to be a full (accounting of) the facts and foundation," foreign ministry spokeswoman Hua Chunying said. "China will handle it in accordance with relevant international and Chinese laws according to the facts." She said Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Y

The foundation has been doing this kind of work since 1982, when it was founded by ex-Yankees owner George Steinbrenner. According to the New York Daily News, this is how Steinbrenner — who died in 2010 — was inspired to
