Thailand to deport Aust pedophile to NZ

A 59-year old Australian teacher with dual New Zealand citizenship is to be deported from Thailand following his arrested in the country's north on suspicion of child sex offences. Peter Dundas Walbran, originally from Sydney, has been held in immigration detention cells in Bangkok since his December 9 arrest in the northeastern town of Ubon Ratchthani, 600 kilometres away, where he taught at a local international school. Investigators say the deportation is expected to take place late on Friday as Thai police re-examine some of the digital media recovered from his apartment on the day of his arrest. If they find anything illegal on his computer hard drive, they could have him extradited from New Zealand. But so far they haven't found anything incriminating that would lead to charges in Thailand. Walbran, a former head of the Australian International School in Jakarta, was jailed in Indonesia in 2012 and served two years of a three-year jail term for the rape and molesta

Yemen peace talks struggling: sources

"Yemeni peace talks in Switzerland appear to be struggling amid differences over government demands for the release of senior officials held by the Iran-allied Houthis, sources close to the talks say. The dispute comes amid fresh fighting between the Houthis and forces loyal to the Saudi-backed President Abd-Rabbu Mansour Hadi in which at least 15 people were killed from both sides, according to tribal and medical sources. UN-sponsored peace talks began on Tuesday away from television cameras in Switzerland to try to end nearly nine months of fighting that has killed almost 6000 people and displaced millions. The sources said that direct talks between the two sides have been suspended since Wednesday evening, after the Houthis rejected demands to free senior officials, including Defence Minister Mahmoud al-Subaihi and Hadi's brother, Nasser. Both Subaihi and Nasser Mansour Hadi, who was responsible for intelligence operations in the provinces of Aden, Lahej and Abyan, h

No real drop in migrants since Turkey deal

"No real drop in migrants since Turkey deal The European Union has seen little evidence that Turkey has managed to reduce departures of migrants for Greek islands in the two weeks since it signed an agreement to do so, an EU document shows. The report by the Luxembourg government, in its current capacity as president of EU ministerial councils, said about 4000 people a day arrived from Turkey since the accord on November 29, a "slight reduction" from the 5000-6000 seen earlier in that month. But this was not necessarily due to Turkish action. "This decrease may, however, also be attributed to other factors," said the report, seen by Reuters and sent to EU leaders on Wednesday ahead of a summit on Thursday in Brussels at which they will discuss efforts to stem the migration crisis. EU border agency Frontex has said arrivals in Greece in all of November were 108,000, roughly half the figure for October, largely because weather conditions had deteriorated

Baltimore on edge after hung jury in policeman's manslaughter trial

A mistrial was declared on Wednesday in the case of a Baltimore police officer charged in the death of Freddie Gray, a black man whose killing while in custody sparked riots in April, and the city's mayor urged calm. The judge dismissed the jury in the involuntary manslaughter trial of Officer William Porter - the first of six officers to be tried in Gray's death - after 16 hours of deliberations during which the jurors were unable to reach a verdict on any of the charges against the policeman. Baltimore City Circuit Court Judge Barry Williams said an administrative judge would schedule a new trial, but said there would be no court proceedings in the case on Thursday. Gray's death triggered rioting in the majority-black city of 620,000 people, and intensified a U.S. debate on police treatment of minorities. On Wednesday, scores of protesters marched through downtown Baltimore following the ruling, chanting "we have nothing to lose but our chains" and &quo

Fed raises interest rates, citing ongoing U.S. recovery

"The Federal Reserve hiked interest rates for the first time in nearly a decade on Wednesday, signaling faith that the U.S. economy had largely overcome the wounds of the 2007-2009 financial crisis. The U.S. central bank's policy-setting committee raised the range of its benchmark interest rate by a quarter of a percentage point to between 0.25 percent and 0.50 percent, ending a lengthy debate about whether the economy was strong enough to withstand higher borrowing costs. "With the economy performing well and expected to continue to do so, the committee judges that a modest increase in the federal funds rate is appropriate," Fed Chair Janet Yellen said in a press conference after the rate decision was announced. "The economic recovery has clearly come a long way." The Fed's policy statement noted the "considerable improvement" in the U.S. labor market, where the unemployment rate has fallen to 5 percent, and said policymakers are &quo

Court Adjourns Indefinitely Over Saraki, Ekweremadu's Removal Suit

"The suit seeking the removal of the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his Deputy, Ike Ekweremadu from office on Monday, December 14, suffered another setback. This Day reports that the federal high court sitting in Abuja, presided over by Justice Ademola Adeniyi, has reserved judgment in the suit seeking to remove the Senate President and his deputy from office for allegedly forging the Senate Standing Orders 2015, which brought them to power. It was reported that when the matter came up for hearing, the parties involved adopted their written addresses, and in a response the trial judge adjourned indefinitely for judgment. He said the date for the judgment would be made known to the parties involved. In the suit, the plaintiffs, Senators Abu Ibrahim, Kabir Marafa, Ajayi Boroffice, Olugbenga and Suleiman Hunkuni, had requested the court to abandon the supposed election of Saraki and Ekweremadu as well as set aside the Senate Standing Order 2015 as amended. Mourinho Discusses Chelsea January Transfer Window Plans

"Despite Chelsea’s abysmal season to date the injury to key player Eden Hazard, Chelsea boss Jose Mourinho has revealed he will not be looking to spend money in the summer.  The Blues were defeated by fellow Blues Leicester City 2 – 1 thanks to goals from Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez. Hazard was substituted with an injury after he was tackled by Vardy. The Belgian appeared to be suffering from an hip injury after falling on his wrong side. Despite the injuries and the poor form of his team, Mourinho insists he will not be signing anyone in the January transfer window. He told Chelsea’s official website: “I don’t think it is right I go to the board and say these players are not good and we need to spend 50 or 100 or whatever. “We have these players and it is with these players we have to go, and the players that are not performing well must feel attacked in their pride, in their self-esteem and they have to do everything to get results in a humble way.” The def

Fans Blast Toke Makinwa For Returning To Estranged Husband

Toke Makinwa and her estranged husband seem to be back in each other’s arms. The couple was seen together at the recently held on Sunday, December 6. While some people are happy for the couple, some of Makinwa’s fans are disappointed in her for taking back her estranged husband. Toke on her Vlog, Toke Moments, gives relationship advice. More often than not, she has been known to address the issue of infidelity, she has encouraged women that the cheating spouse must be dumped. Javier Mascherano Sentenced To 12 Months In Prison For Tax Fraud In Spain

"Barcelona defender, Javier Mascherano has been sentenced to 12 months of jail term after pleading guilty in tax fraud case. He was also fined €815,000. The former Liverpool player was charged with two counts of tax frauds, €600,000 in 2011 and more than €968,000 in 2012. Fortunately for the 31-year-old, he will not serve the sentence because the case is a non-violent one. Normally, Spanish courts generally do not ask the accused to serve the sentence if the case is non-violent and the jail-time needed to be served is less than two years but he will face the jail if he commits the offence again in the next 1 year." CBN’s SLF to banks closes at N509.66bn in April

Total Standing Lending Facility (SLF) granted by the Central Bank of NIGERIA (CBN) in the month of April 2015 stood at N509.66 billion, compared with a total request of N544.95 billion in March 2015. The apex bank’s economic report for April released recently showed that transactions at the Standing Deposit Facility (SDF) window amounted to N518.57 billion. This, according to CBN, represented a daily average of N37.04 billion for the 14 working days in the month, reflecting a decline of 93.76 per cent below the level in the preceding month. Meanwhile, available data indicated that at N6,017.1 billion, foreign assets (net) of the banking system on-month-on-month basis, increased by 0.5 per cent at end of the period under review, compared with the increase of 2.5 and 1.9 per cent at the end of the preceding month and the corresponding period of 2014, respectively. “The development was attributed, largely, to the 17.2 per cent increase in the foreign asset (net) holdings of the de

I’ll appoint ministers in September – Buhari

Seeks Obama’s help to recover $150bn loots BY Emma Emeozor The long wait for new ministers will end in September, as President Muhammadu Buhari has given indication that he will constitute his cabinet in about ONE and half months. Revealing this in an opinion published yesterday in Washington Post, ahead of his meeting within United States President Barack Obama, Buhari also sought the US help in recovering about $150 billion stolen money. Buhari’s article reads: “This month, the world moved a step closer to the defeat of Boko Haram, the jihadist group that has terrorised hundreds of thousands in the northern states of NIGERIA. In ONE of my first acts since taking office as President six weeks ago, I have replaced the heads of NIGERIA’s Army, Navy and Air Force. Our new military leadership has not been chosen because of their familiarity with those in government, as was too often the case in the past, but on their track records and qualifications alone. “These new military l

Texas prosecutor says too soon to say how woman died in cell

By MICHAEL GRACZYK HEMPSTEAD, Texas (AP) — The prosecutor in a Texas county where authorities say a woman hanged herself in a jail cell said Monday that it is too soon to determine exactly how she died and that the ongoing case is being treated as thoroughly "as it would be in a murder investigation." Waller County District Attorney Elton Mathis said at a news conference that a Texas Rangers investigation into the death of Sandra Bland, whose family and friends dispute that she killed herself, is being supervised by the FBI. Authorities have said Bland, a 28-year-old black woman from Naperville, Illinois, hanged herself with a plastic garbage bag July 13, three days after her arrest during a confrontational traffic stop. Her death at the Waller County jail, about 60 miles northwest of Houston, comes amid increased national scrutiny of police after a series of high-profile cases in which blacks have been killed by officers. "It is very much too early

Kerry says Iran vow to defy U.S. is 'very disturbing'

DUBAI (Reuters) - U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry said a speech by Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei on Saturday vowing to defy American policies in the region despite a deal with world powers over Tehran's nuclear program was "very disturbing". "I don't know how to interpret it at this point in time, except to take it at face value, that that's his policy," he said in the interview with Saudi-owned Al Arabiya television, parts of which the network quoted on Tuesday. "But I do know that often comments are made publicly and things can evolve that are different. If it is the policy, it's very disturbing, it's very troubling," he added. Ayatollah Khamenei told supporters on Saturday that U.S. policies in the region were "180 degrees" opposed to Iran's, at a speech in a Tehran mosque punctuated by chants of "Death to America" and "Death to Israel". "Even after this deal our policy tow

Toshiba CEO quits over accounting scandal

By Ritsuko Ando TOKYO (Reuters) - Toshiba Corp's <6502.T> chief executive Hisao Tanaka and a string of other senior officials resigned on Tuesday for their roles in the country's biggest accounting scandal in years. Tanaka will be temporarily replaced by Chairman Masashi Muromachi after an independent inquiry found the CEO had been aware the company had inflated its profits by $1.2 billion over a period of several years. "I see this as the most damaging event for our brand in the company's 140-year history," Tanaka told a news conference after making a ritual deep bow of contrition to a flurry of camera shutters and flashes. "I don't think these problems can be overcome overnight." Muromachi is considered a safe pair of hands to lead Toshiba through its current turmoil before handing the reins to a successor. The company plans to announce next month the delayed business results for the financial year ended in March. Tanaka's p

North Korea says no interest in Iran-style nuclear deal

Seoul (AFP) - North Korea said Tuesday it had no interest in following Iran down the path of nuclear dialogue, insisting it was already a nuclear weapons state and therefore beyond any logical comparison with Tehran. One week after the historic deal that cleared a path to lift sanctions crippling Iran's economy in exchange for limits on its nuclear programme, Pyongyang rejected any suggestion that it might follow suit. North Korea "is not interested at all in the dialogue to discuss the issue of making it freeze or dismantle its nukes unilaterally," a foreign ministry spokesman said. "It is illogical to compare Iran's nuclear agreement with the situation of (North Korea) which is exposed to constant provocative military hostile acts and the biggest nuclear threat of the US," the spokesman told the North's official KCNA news agency. Both Tehran and Pyongyang, allies since Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution, have been subjected to tough economi
