Terrorists overrun CDS, Badeh’s home town

By Umar Yusuf & Ndahi Marama YOLA —Few hours after the commercial nerve centre and the second biggest town in Adamawa State fell into the hands of Islamic sect, Boko Haram, the insurgents, yesterday, overran Vimtim, the home town of the Chief of Defence Staff, Air Marshal Alex Badeh. The terrorists have thus rubbished the purported ceasefire agreement announced by the Chief of Defence Staff and his earlier vow on January 20 this year that the Boko Haram menace would end last April. Mubi town was invaded, yesterday, by the terrorists who stormed the 234 Nigerian Army Battalion, burnt down the police station and the Mubi prison, setting the inmates free. The insurgents also hoisted their flag at the Palace of the Emir of Mubi. When the insurgents invaded the town, the troops and the residents fled while they had a field day looting and burning property. As at yesterday, Mubi was like a ghost town as the entire residents have deserted it even as some edifices like the Mubi Inte

Drama, as 14-yr-old suspected killer bride goes ‘dumb’ in court

By AbdulSalam Muhammad KANO—There was a mild drama at Gezawa High Court, Kano, yesterday as a girl-bride, Wasila Tasi, suspected to have killed her husband and three others in April, failed to utter a word in court during her trial. The high profile culpable homicide case that attracted the attention of the human rights community was nearly stalled by refusal of the 14-year-old suspect to speak. Consequently, the presiding judge, Justice Muhammad Yahaya was compelled to enter a plea of ‘not guilty’ on her behalf shortly after the charged sheet was read and explained to her in the local dialect. Wasila, looking perturbed at the dock, was repeatedly asked whether she understood the content of what was read before her, but each time she failed to utter a word as the court registrar ran through the four-count charge of culpable homicide punishable by death under Section 221 A of the Penal Code. The decision of the court to enter a plea of not guilty on her behalf revived the case as

Life goes on for nurse in standoff over Ebola

By ROBERT F. BUKATY FORT KENT, Maine (AP) — In between going on a bike ride and taking delivery of a pizza, nurse Kaci Hickox and her boyfriend did chores and watched a movie while state officials struggled to reach a compromise in a standoff that has become the nation's most closely watched clash between personal freedom and fear of Ebola. The nurse who treated Ebola patients in Sierra Leone and her boyfriend, Ted Wilbur, purposefully rode their bikes away from town on a dirt path to avoid coming into contact with people. "We're not trying to push any limits here. We're members of this community, too, and we want to make people comfortable," he told reporters Thursday evening. Hickox, who returned to the U.S. last week, has been under what Maine is calling a voluntary quarantine at her home in this town of 4,300 people. She has rebelled against the restrictions, saying that her rights are being violated and that she is no threat to others because she

LeBron falters in emotional return to Cleveland

By TOM WITHERS CLEVELAND (AP) — Carried onto the floor by an emotional ovation building for years, LeBron James is back where he began. He's home. Introduced to a deafening roar from Cleveland fans, James was welcomed back Thursday night by a city desperate to end a championship drought that's about to turn 50 years old. James came back to try and end it, and his journey is underway. At 8:08 p.m. all was right in Cleveland again. That when James, the last starter announced, walked onto the floor in a Cavs uniform for a regular season game for the first time in four years. Nearly four months since proclaiming "I'm coming home" and shifting the NBA's balance of power, James is again playing in front of family, friends and the Cleveland fans who had their hearts broken when he left for Miami four years ago. This is a homecoming like no other. "None of us should take this moment for granted," a relaxed James said following Cleveland

Mexico police questioned in killing of 3 Americans

By CHRISTOPHER SHERMAN MATAMOROS, Mexico (AP) — Authorities are investigating a possible police connection to the killing of three U.S. citizens visiting their father in Mexico who were found shot to death along with a Mexican friend more than two weeks after going missing. Parents of the three siblings, whose bodies were identified Thursday, have said witnesses reported they were seized by men dressed in police gear calling themselves "Hercules," a tactical security unit in the violent border city of Matamoros heavily racked by cartel infighting. Nine of the unit's 40 officers are being questioned, Tamaulipas state Attorney General Ismael Quintanilla Acosta said. It would be the third recent case of alleged abuse and killings by Mexican security forces and the first to involve Americans. The country already is engulfed in the case of 43 teachers college students missing in southern Guerrero state at the hands of a mayor and police working with a drug cartel. F

Trooper ambush suspect caught, death penalty eyed

By MICHAEL RUBINKAM LORDS VALLEY, Pa. (AP) — A survivalist accused of ambushing two state troopers, killing one and seriously wounding the other, was captured on Thursday by U.S. marshals near an abandoned airplane hangar, ending a seven-week manhunt that had rattled the nerves of area residents. Prosecutors will seek the death penalty for Eric Frein, who meekly gave himself up when surrounded, authorities said. "He did not just give up because he was tired," state police Commissioner Frank Noonan said. "He gave up because he was caught." State police said they didn't know whether Frein, who was unarmed when captured, had been using the hangar as a shelter during his 48 days on the run, and they wouldn't say what they found there. Frein was held in the handcuffs of the trooper he's accused of killing, Gov. Tom Corbett said Thursday at a nighttime news conference. The quiet takedown of Frein, who kneeled and put his hands up when marshals a

Nigeria Escapes FIFA’s Axe

After the Football’s world governing body FIFA had given African champions Nigeria until midday on Friday to overturn the court ruling and reinstate Pinnick or face a ban from international competition, has come to an end as the case has cease to have life. The court case against Nigeria’s football association that threatened to earn the country a lengthy ban from international competition has been dropped, lawyers said on Thursday. But a fresh hearing on Thursday was told that Giwa had now withdrawn his complaint. “I have struck out the matter. The suit ceases to have life,” said Judge Ambrose Allagoa. Giwa’s lawyer Habila Ardzard, said the decision had been made “as a result of pleas from so many well-meaning Nigerians and in the national interest”. It would be recalled that a judge in Jos had last week ruled that the appointment of a new president, Amaju Pinnick, and executive committee should be set aside. http://www.nigeriafilms.com/

N4.4bn debt: Kaduna DISCO seeks National Assembly intervention

The Managing Director/Chief Executive Officer of Kaduna Electricity Distribution Company, Mallam Idris D. Mohammed, has appealed to the National Assembly to intervene in the N4.4 billion debt owed it by military formations and the police. Mohammed said the intervention by the National Assembly had become imperative in order to get the security agencies to pay up the N4.4 billion they owed the company. The Kaduna DISCO CEO made the appeal when the Chairman, Senate Committee on Privatisation, Mr. Olugbenga Obadara paid a courtesy visit to the firm. Mohammed equally enjoined the committee to strengthen the existing legislation to deal with vandals of electricity installations in the country and power theft. He added that the management had embarked on systematic and result-driven restructuring of the workforce before handing over to the new investors. Responding, Obadara affirmed that government had no business running businesses while commending the Bureau of Public

Boko Haram attacks Emir’s palace, creates panic

Pandemonium yesterday enveloped Mubi, the commercial nerve centre of Adamawa State, as Boko Haram attacked a military unit, police station, the emir’s palace and prison in the city. Daily Sun gathered that the insurgents, in a swift attack, moved from Michika to Uba and finally Mubi where they wreaked devastating havoc. In the attack, the Mubi Divisional Police Station, palace of the Emir of Mubi, Alhaji Isah Ahmadu, a military unit in the city and the prisons were hit. No fewer than 45 inmates of the prison were said to have escaped. All efforts to get the Army Public Relations Officer of the 23rd Armoured Brigade, Yola, Captain Jaafaru Nuhu, failed, as his phones were not reachable, as at the time of filing this report. It was, however, gathered that the military engaged the insurgents in a gun duel to prevent them from attacking the country home of the Chief of Defence Staff, Alex Badeh. As at time of filing these reports, the number of casualties on both sides could not

Ban obsolete aircraft from Nigerian airspace, NSE tells FG

Following the high rate of air disasters in the country and in line with reforms in the aviation sector, Nigerian Society of Engineers (NSE), yesterday demanded that only brand new aircraft should be allowed to operate in the Nigerian airspace. Speaking to newsmen in Abuja, the President of NSE, Ademola Isaac Olorunfemi, said that aviation is the life blood of global economy. “It remains the most sophisticated industries in the world with enormous potential economic advantages. We commend the president for embarking on the restructuring of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA). However, the government must deliberately continue to create enabling environment for the industry to thrive through strategic policy formulation,” he said. According to him, Nigeria has 22 federally-owned airports and an estimated passenger volume of 15 to 20 million by the year 2020, an indication that the country must ensure sound economic policies to make aviation a vehicle for nationa

Oshiomhole says alleged attacks on PDP chieftains are diversionary

THE Edo State governor, Adams Oshiomhole, yesterday took a swipe on the opposition People’s Democratic Party (PDP) in state, accusing it and its members of orchestrating the recent spate of attacks and counter-attacks in the state to cause diversion from the “real issues.”    Speaking during a town hall meeting with traditional rulers, opinion leaders and others, Oshiomhole said the spate of “politically-motivated violent activities” were orchestrated by leaders of the state chapter of the PDP and Federal Government to detract and frustrate the attention and mission of his government in order to seize power.   The governor criticised some chieftains of the PDP, Pastor Osagie Ize-Iyamu and Frank Erewele, who recently alleged that attacks in their residences were masterminded by the governor.   He said: “Because we are the ones in government, we must bear the burden of peace. Today in Edo State, having chased PDP out of power not by force of arms but by the vote of our people who

Police hunt for killers of South Africa’s football captain, Meyiwa

SOUTH African police Monday launched a massive operation to find the killers of the national soccer team captain, who was fatally shot during an apparent house robbery, underscoring the country’s high rate of violent crime.   Goalkeeper Senzo Meyiwa was killed around 8 p.m. on Sunday after two gunmen entered a house he was visiting in Vosloorus township near Johannesburg while an accomplice waited outside, police said. The 27-year-old Meyiwa was shot in the upper body, national police commissioner Gen. Riah Phiyega said at a news conference announcing the manhunt for the three suspects.  Police also raised the reward to nearly $23,000, hoping to get more information to find Meyiwa’s killers.  The goalkeeper was shot while trying to stop the intruders, who had demanded cellphones and money from people inside the home, said friend Tumelo Waka Madlala, who was at the house during the robbery. “As they were running away we tried to stop them and that is when they shot him at point

• Group lauds conduct of election A SUSPECTED thug, who attempted to disrupt last Saturday’s council poll at Orhuwohorun Primary School in Ovwian Aladja, Udu Local Council of Delta State, has been arrested by the police.   The Delta Police Spokesman, Mr. Roland Preston, said in Asaba yesterday that while accreditation was going on at wards/units 15, 16, 17 and 19 at Orhuwohorun Primary School during the election, some suspected cultists/political thugs numbering over 50 armed with battle axes, cutlasses and gallons of fuel invaded the premises, chased away officials of the Delta State Independent Electoral Commission (DSIEC) and voters, and also destroyed some electoral materials.   Preston said that on receipt of the information, some patrol teams swiftly mobilised to the scene and arrested one of the miscreants 25 with a cutlass while others escaped, adding that two other sharp cutlasses were recovered at the scene.   The spokesman said that investigation was still ongoing wh

Jet on Navy training mission crashes, kills pilot

PORT HUENEME, Calif. (AP) — A jet on a military training exercise crashed into an agricultural field near a Southern California Navy base Wednesday, killing the pilot, authorities said. The plane disintegrated when it hit the ground at about 5:15 p.m. as it was preparing to land at Naval Station Ventura County. The crash sent a huge plume of billowing black smoke into the sky 65 miles northwest of Los Angeles. The pilot, the only person aboard, was pronounced dead at the scene, said Ventura County fire Capt. Mike Lindbery. Nobody on the ground was hurt. "Fortunately nobody was in that portion of the field," Lindbery said. The plane, a civilian fighter jet contracted by the Navy, had just finished playing the role of an enemy aircraft in an offshore training exercise and was preparing to land at the naval station when it went down across the street in a field near the Pacific Coast Highway, base spokeswoman Kimberly Gearhart said. She said it was unclear whether

Sri Lanka says no hope finding mudslide survivors

By ERANGA JAYAWARDENA KOSLANDA, Sri Lanka (AP) — A Sri Lankan official said Thursday there was no hope of finding survivors after a mudslide tore through a tea plantation, but there were widely conflicting reports about how many people had been buried alive under the rubble and mud. Disaster Management Minister Mahinda Amaraweera estimated the number of dead in Wednesday's disaster at the Koslanda tea plantation would be fewer than 100, although villagers said the figure could easily exceed 200. "I have visited the scene and from what I saw I don't think there will be any survivors," Amaraweera told The Associated Press on Thursday. "But that number is less than 100." Initial reports from Sri Lanka's Disaster Management Center said some 250 people were missing. But Amaraweera has cut that figure significantly, saying some people believed to have been buried were actually at work or school when the mudslide struck at 7:30 a.m. in the island nat

Lava 100 feet from Hawaii home, nearing main road

By AUDREY McAVOY and JENNIFER SINCO KELLEHER PAHOA, Hawaii (AP) — Rain fell Wednesday on a red-hot river of lava as it threatened to consume its first home on its slow advance into a rural Hawaii town. A breakout of the lava flow was about 100 feet from a Pahoa residence — about the length of a basketball court, said Hawaii County Civil Defense Director Darryl Oliveira. The couple that lives in the home has left. Scientists from the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory who are walking alongside the lava reported its leading edge was 240 yards from Pahoa Village Road, which goes through a commercial hub of the Big Island's sprawling and isolated Puna district. "This is just a little quiet village in a very rural community. We farm, we fish, we hunt," said Jamila Dandini. "We're going to be an island on an island." The leading edge remained in a large agricultural parcel that included another house, which was about 100 yards from the lava, Oliveira said.

Showdown imminent over nurse's quarantine in Maine

By ROBERT F. BUKATY FORT KENT, Maine (AP) — State police plan to monitor the movements and interactions of a nurse who vowed to defy the state's quarantine for health care workers who treat Ebola patients, but troopers cannot take her into custody without a judge's permission. State officials were seeking a court order to detain Kaci Hickox for the remainder of the 21-day incubation period for Ebola that ends on Nov. 10. Hickox contends there's no need for quarantine because she's showing no symptoms, and she made her point by stepping outside her home briefly Wednesday night to talk to reporters, even shaking one reporter's hand. Police watched from across the street. "There's a lot of misinformation about how Ebola is transmitted, and I can understand why people are frightened. But their fear is not based on medical facts," Norman Siegel, one of her attorneys, said Wednesday as a showdown appeared imminent. Hickox, who volunteered in Sie

Bumgarner, Giants beat KC 3-2 in Series Game 7

By BEN WALKER KANSAS CITY, Missouri (AP) — Madison Bumgarner pitched five innings of near-perfect relief as the San Francisco Giants held off the Kansas City Royals 3-2 Wednesday night in Game 7 of the World Series for their third championship in five seasons. With both starters chased early, this became a matchup of bullpens. And no one stood taller than the 6-foot-5 Bumgarner, who added to his postseason legacy with a third victory this Series. After Gregor Blanco misplayed Alex Gordon's drive for a single and two-base error, Bumgarner got Salvador Perez to pop foul to third baseman Pablo Sandoval for the final out. The Giants ended a Series streak that had seen home teams win the last nine Game 7s. San Francisco took this pairing of wild-card teams after earning titles in 2012 and 2010.

Milk May Do a Body More Harm Than Good

By Ryan Wallace Long-held beliefs about milk's health benefits may need to be put out to pasture, according to a new study.  (Photo: Thinkstock) For decades, we've been told that milk "does the body good," but too much of a good thing could take a toll on our health, according to new research. Contrary to popular belief, drinking large amounts of milk each day does not lower a person's risk of bone fractures and instead may be associated with a higher rate of death, according to a new study. This is counterintuitive to what has long been championed by some doctors and nutritionists: A diet rich in milk products can build strong bones and reduce the likelihood of fractures for those at risk for age-related bone loss. The idea is simple. Our bodies do need calcium to build and maintain healthy bones as well as aid in other important tasks, such as regulate the heart's rhythm and help blood to clot. And when it comes to food sources, milk and other dair

SHOCKER!! An abandoned Road for about a Decade in Ogun State

Today, the 29th of October, 2014, I saw and heard the shocker of my life regarding the actual state of an area in this country, Nigeria. I never knew some places like this still exist and that people still actually move on bare feet in the mud just to make ends for themselves. Nigeria is a great nation; the people are a great and hardworking people, however, some bad eggs are the ones dragging the name of this great country in mud. Precisely today, I went to a place in Ogun state, Agbara. Lusada to be specific, and I saw the road people moved on. I thought to myself as I saw people move in the mud, "these people are really suffering....and the Government has got to find something to do about this". Democracy is termed "Government of the people, By the people and FOR THE PEOPLE". If it is actually true that we are under Democratic ruling and the meaning is what is depicts, why is the government not doing anything about this place? I will not hesitate to com
