Amazon founder Jeff Bezos is to launch a $2bn (£1.53bn) fund to help homeless families and launch pre-schools in poor communities. The world's richest man made the announcement on Twitter a year after he asked for ideas on how he could use his personal fortune - estimated to be about $163bn (£124.34bn) - for charitable efforts. The Bezos Day One Fund will contribute to "existing non-profit organisations that help homeless families" and also fund "a network of new, non-profit, tier-one pre-schools in low-income communities," he wrote. Organisations will be given grants for "doing compassionate, needle-moving work to provide shelter and hunger support to address the needs of young families". Volkswagen will halt the production of Beetles in 2019, marking the end of the road for one of the world's most beloved cars. The German company will introduce two special editions of the vehicle before it stops making the model altogether in July. Volkswagen is sidelining the Beetle, renowned for its distinctive curved shape and round lights, to focus on producing electric cars and larger family vehicles. The company has not ruled out bringing the Beetle back in future but says it has no plans at this time. Hinrich Woebcken, chief executive of the Volkswagen Group of America, said in a statement: "As we move to being a full-line, family-focused automaker in the US and ramp up our electrification strategy... there are no immediate plans to replace it. China's best-paid film star, Fan Bingbing, has been given zero per cent "Social Responsibility" rating by Chinese authorities after she went missing recently. Bingbing, who was also a part of X-Men: Days of Future Past, was named last in a ranking of 100 celebrities. According to the state-run China Daily, this ranking depends on one's professional life, charitable work and personal integrity. Ma Zhanwu, Chinese Consul General in Kolkata, on Wednesday said that his country was mooting a bullet train service between Kunming and Kolkata, traversing through Myanmar and Bangladesh. A high-speed rail link could be established between the two cities with joined efforts between India and China, Zhanwu said at a conference in Kolkata. "It will only take a few hours to reach Kolkata from Kunming if the rail link becomes a reality," he asserted. The envoy also said that Myanmar and Bangladesh would benefit from the project. "We may have a cluster of industries along the route. That increases the possibility of economic development of countries involved in the 2,800 km-long project," he maintained. The project had also found mention at the Greater Mekong Subregion (GMS) meet in Kunming in 2015, he said. Dozens of explosions apparently triggered by a natural gas pipeline rupture rocked three communities near Boston, injuring at least six people and prompting the evacuation of hundreds, local officials said. Live TV images showed firefighters battling blazes in Lawrence, Andover and North Andover, around 25 miles (40 km)north of the Massachusetts capital. The streets were darkened after utility crews cut off electricity and began shutting down gas service to the area to prevent the ignition of further blasts. At least three people, including one firefighter, were hurt in Andover, the town said in a statement. Six people were being treated at Lawrence General Hospital, spokeswoman Jill McDonald Halsey said. It was not immediately clear if any of those being treated at that hospital were from Andover.
