It was a hectic day for the police on Sunday night when some hoodlums invaded the Adogo Police Station in Ajaokuta Local Government Area of Kogi State and bombed a section of the station.
According to an eyewitness account, the hoodlums gained entry into the police station at about 8.30 p.m. and started shooting sporadically to scare away the people.
Some of the gunmen, who had positioned themselves were said to have shot their way into the police armoury, but it was learnt that they met a stiff resistance from the police on duty, who returned fire for fire.
The hoodlums, who were said to have used IEDs to bomb part of the station were reported to have targeted the armoury where they planned to cart away arms and ammunition.
For more than two hours, the source said the police engaged the gunmen who came into the police station from different directions, but the attack was finally repelled when a reinforcement of a combined military and the police finally came to their rescue.
Some of the gunmen were said to have fled into the bush with bullet wounds.
Although, there was no reported loss of lives, the sudden eruption of gun fire as a result of the attack made the indigenes of the community to scamper for safety while social life in the community became crippled.
The Kogi State Police Command, in a statement on Monday said there was no casualty as the gunmen were successfully engaged by its officers.
The Police Public Relations Officer, Elvis Aguebor, who said detectives had swung into action to arrest the fleeing hoodlums called on members of the public to remain calm as the police were in control.
The statement said the new police commissioner, Paul Okafor would not leave any stone unturned to wipe out bad boys from the state as machinery had been put in place to safeguard lives and property.
He called on members of the public to report any suspicious movements or anybody seen with bullet wounds to the nearest police station in the state.
