The Elders Council of Kpokpo community has reacted to the claim made by the Ijaw of Gbaramatu in Warri South-West Local Government Area, Delta State that they own Kpokpo.
The council described the claim as false, misleading and capable of breaching the peace existing between the Itsekiri and Ijaw.
Vanguard reports that the council of elders in a statement issued on Wednesday by Prince Nelson Kolo, said that Kpokpoland was given to Prince Kolo Fregene as a virgin land by Ugborodo community.
The statement said Prince Fregene dwelt in the land with his wives, children and servants and when he passed away, his siblings continued to stay there until recently when the Ijaw came and burnt the place down.
He added that the Ijaw in Kpokpo came to the land as tenants to do their fishing business and asked why the Ijaw burnt it down during the Warri crisis, if it actually belonged to them.
The statement further hinted that the Fregene family has in its possession documents to show that they own the place, noting that the Ijaw of Gbaramatu could not produce any evidence to show the fact finding committee set up by the state government headed by the Deputy Governor, Prof. Amos Otuama, that they own Kpokpo or any part of the land on which the Export Processing Zone is built.
Prince Kolo while appealing to the Ijaws to allow peace to reign by saying the truth, also urged said the Federal Government to apply the rule of law and justice and fix another date for the grand-breaking ceremony of the EPZ in Ogidighan community.
It would be recalled that President Goodluck Jonathan on November 14, reportedly backed off from the commissioning of the $16 billion Delta Gas City project in Delta State due to threats from the Ijaw of Gbaramatu kingdom to unleash violence if he does.
However, reaction trailed the President’s decision to decline commissioning the grand-breaking project as the Itsekiri youths gave the President a seven-day ultimatum to do so, but President Goodluck Jonathan, however, responded to the ultimatum.
Meanwhile, the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) recently blasted the Forum of Past Youth Leaders of Ethnic Nationalities in the South-South (FPYLENS) for telling President Goodluck Jonathan not to contest in 2015 general election.
