shopping centre has defended its larger pink ringed parking spots for women, calling them ‘practical’.
The World Metropolis (Dashijiedaduhui) centre, in Dalian, northeast China’s Liaoning province, was criticised after it emerged it had ten spaces outside its complex marked with a sign saying ‘respectfully reserved for women’.
The spots, which are 30cm wider than usual, were introduced by the shopping mall’s management because women reportedly had trouble with normal spaces.
‘We just wanted to make things easier for women, who make up most of our customers,’ Yang Hongjun, who works for World Metropolis, told AFP.
Not everyone bought her explanation, however, with one user on Chinese social media writing: ‘This is supposed to respect women, but actually it’s an insult.’
Female manager Yang added: ‘It’s not an insult to women at all.
‘If their parking spaces are larger, it’s only for practical reasons.
‘It doesn’t mean that women drive less well than men.
